THANKFUL THURSDAY: MERCY SHIPS

When was the last time you visited a doctor or received some kind of medical care? Has there ever been a time when you needed a doctor but didn't have access to one?

Likely your answer to that last question is a resounding "no".

Seeing a doctor was something I took for granted when I was younger. But having had the opportunity to see the world, my heart breaks when I realized that having access to a doctor is a luxury.

It's a luxury that 50% of people in Africa do not have. In Africa, there are 2.5 physicians per 10,000 people. While in America, there are 24.2 physicians per 10,000 people. Sadly, 1 out of 8 kids die before they reach the age of 5 and most die from treatable causes. How is that even allowed?

Thankfully, there are incredible organizations working towards changing that reality!

Mercy Ships is one of those organizations. And I'm blown away by their vision and how much good they have done and are doing!

For 35+ years, they have helped 2.48 million children and families on their ships! Yes, ships! They provide medical care on ships which allows for easy access to the people, clean water, electricity, and a safe and clean environment for medical care. Plus, each ship can carry 450 volunteers to provide free life-saving surgeries at each port. But even more, they are training up local healthcare providers in Africa to make a lasting impact. Further, they are teaching the local people better farming methods to decrease the likelihood of malnutrition.

Mercy Ships is this week's Sevenly cause! If you aren't familiar with Sevenly, they are an amazing company helping to raise awareness to the injustices in this world and encouraging generous hearts. For each purchase of one of their items, Sevenly donates $7 to the cause of the week!

So will you join us this week? Your help, whether big or small, can make a huge impact by providing free life-saving surgeries for Africa, where medical care is scarce. But even more, you are transforming lives of real people just like you and me!

Here are my favorite Sevenly T-shirt designs from this week:

  6. Mercy Ships sounds like a wonderful organization. We sometimes forget to realize how fortunate we are to have access to physicians and medical care.
