As I mentioned in my last post, I love Sevenly and the different causes they support each week. This week's cause is especially near and dear to me. The Sheepfold is an organization that raises awareness to the prevalence of domestic abuse and provides support and safe houses to women and children who are lucky enough to escape their abuser. I know I promised an update about Kenya, but I thought this was too important.

It was not until one year ago that I became familiar with the ugly reality of domestic abuse. I've always known that it happens, but I never thought it would hit so close to my loved ones. There are so many misconceptions about domestic abuse, but I want you to realize that it can occur in homes of any socioeconomic status, any religion, and any ethnicity/race. When I found out that someone near & dear to me was a victim of domestic abuse, my views completely changed.

It was interesting to see how different people around my friend reacted to hearing this truth. Abuse is hidden well and there is a cycle of violence. It breaks my heart when people judge victims for not leaving their abuser. It's way easier said than done. And shouldn't we be showing LOVE to victims instead of adding to what they already experience behind closed doors? I'm not going to go into the reasons why victims stay, but I encourage you to read about it here and here.

I give thanks every day that my friend was able to leave her abuser. She is stronger than ever now and I am thankful that she has had amazing support to overcome the last couple years. The best way for victims to find hope for a future is to have supporters. The Sheepfold provides loving support, a safe home, tools to find employment, and most importantly hope in Christ. Throughout her healing, my friend has attributed her safety and newfound strength to the goodness and love of God.
